Any experienced international traveler knows that each country has a unique set of rules for entry as a foreigner, length of stay allowed, requirements when in-country, etc. The country of Georgia is no different, and this document details what those requirements are.
As of Jan. 1, 2026, all foreign visitors to the country of Georgia are required to show proof of personal health & accident insurance that covers the length of their stay in Georgia. We would encourage you to view this new rule similar to applying for a visa, which is a requirement in many countries around the world for foreign visitors.
Here are the specific requirements that your health & accident policy must fulfill:
- Can be in printed OR electronic form
- Must be in English OR Georgian language (***no other languages accepted!)
- Should show the start and end dates of the policy, which naturally should cover the dates of your trip to Georgia
- The name(s) of the person(s) insured (and any other family members traveling with you)
- Must cover a minimum of 30,000 GEL in costs (approx. $11,500); the amount covered must be cleared stated on policy
- Policy must cover a) Health/Travel Insurance, b) Medical Treatment, and c) Accidents
- Should include the destination of “Georgia” on the policy

Many of our guests often already have a go-to travel insurance provider for their international travel. If that’s the case for you, great!
If not, here are several companies, both Georgian and international, that you can acquire insurance from that meets the requirements of this law:
Georgian companies:
- TBC
- Ardi – has “Extreme” policy option for adventure/sport activities; only works in Georgia – does not provide coverage in other countries
- Aldagi – provides insurance for individuals up to 70 years old
**NOTE: For minors, a parent or guardian must insert the passport information for all individuals under 18 (on the recommended sites).
International companies:
- HeyMondo – includes adventure/sport activities; provides insurance for individuals up to 79 years old
- Travelex – has upgrade options for adventure/sport activities; has budget friendly option and options for families; only available for purchase by US residents; provides insurance for individuals of all ages
- IMG – provides insurance for individuals of all ages; has upgrade option for adventure/sport activities
**DISCLAIMER: The insurance company recommendations above only concern the proper paperwork for border crossings, but not the actual quality of coverage or service in the event that the traveler needs to make use of it. Caucasus Quest cannot be held liable for any insurance companies’ actions with our clients.
Here is the short list of foreign citizens that are NOT required to hold travel/health insurance when entering Georgia:
- Diplomats
- Public Transport or International Freight Truck Drivers
- Foreign holders of Georgian Residency Permits
How will your insurance policy be verified?

We are primarily hearing that insurance policies are being verified by airline staff, before allowing travelers to board their flights to Georgia (similar to visa checks): in Istanbul, Baku, Athens, Paris, Munich, etc. In light of this, please have your policy available to show at any border crossing, if asked by any customs officer. That being said, travelers’ experiences are different. You may have your insurance policy checked multiple times upon entry, or not checked at all. This is a developing policy and law for travel to Georgia, but we don’t know at what level it will be enforced for you or other travelers.
Several of the recommended Georgia travel insurance policies can be purchased for less than US$2 per day, so we do not recommend waiting until the last minute and trying to buy the policy on your phone between landing and entering Tbilisi passport control.
